Toyota has updated its rear-drive GR Supra performance coupe, with the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay®1 as standard.

Building on the significant performance upgrade introduced in late 2020, the technology update now enables GR Supra owners to project Apple CarPlay® on to the 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system without the use of any cables or wiring.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the latest upgrade demonstrated Toyota's commitment to offering its customers the latest technologies.

"Since launching in 2019, the GR Supra has helped drive the growth of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing brand with its exhilarating performance and razor-sharp dynamics," Mr Hanley said.

"Adding wireless CarPlay as standard brings greater convenience for our customers, further increasing the appeal of this automotive icon."

The wireless Apple CarPlay® functionality builds on the already-comprehensive multimedia features including voice activation, Bluetooth®2 connectivity, AM/FM/DAB+ digital radio, satellite navigation and wireless phone charging3.

Offering seamless smartphone integration, apps such as music streaming services are enhanced by a 205W 10-speaker HiFi sound system on the GT, or a sophisticated 425W 12-speaker JBL®4 surround sound system on the GTS.

This latest technology update follows a substantial mechanical upgrade introduced in late 2020 that saw peak power output for the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine boosted from 250kW to 285kW from 5800-6500rpm.

Peak torque remained steady at 500Nm, however was made available over a wider band, from 1800-5000rpm.

Driving the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, the GR Supra is able to complete the sprint from standstill to 100km/h in just 4.1 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 250km/h.

To further aid its dynamic agility, a pair of strut braces were fitted under the bonnet to increase torsional rigidity and handling balance.

The GR Supra continues to be offered in two grades - GT and GTS - that both employ the powerful 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder petrol engine, aided by the fitment of launch control and the choice of Normal or Sport drive modes.

A low centre of gravity, 50/50 weight distribution, a limited-slip differential on the rear axle and an optimised body structure made of rigid steel and aluminium ensure a level of agility and performance worthy of the GR badge.

A comprehensive suite of Toyota Safety Sense features ensure excellent occupant safety, with standard systems including active cruise control, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure alert, rear-end collision warning, reversing camera and the pre-collision safety (PCS) system with daytime pedestrian and cyclist detection.5

When it launched locally in 2019, the GR Supra represented the first production model developed under the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing brand, seeing the return of the fabled Supra nameplate for the first time in 17 years.
