Handy Tip: How to Demist Your Windscreen Quickly

We have all been personally victimised by the persistent foggy windscreen at one stage or another during our driving careers.

As we slowly transition into the chilliest months of the year, our battle with demisting the windscreen quickly becomes a constant in our driving rituals.

Is there a simple way to overcome this?

Firstly, it is important to understand why the windscreen fogs so that we can configure a viable solution. Essentially what occurs is the variance of temperature between the interior and exterior of the vehicle.

Since the temperature in the cabin never drops as low as the weather reading outside, a level of moisture forms within the car. Consequently, as you enter the car of a morning a further disruption of air temperature (warm air in your lungs and cold moist air in the vehicle) results in the creation of water vapour. This water vapour therefore has no other option but to condense on the nearest and coldest surface, your windscreen.

So how do you overcome this imbalance of air temperature?

Easy… set your air-conditioning (AC) to the car demister setting and dial up the air flow to full capacity. In doing so the AC works to immediately remove water vapour from your car.

It is important to note that often where drivers go wrong with this technique is a panicked shutdown of all AC operation as the unexpected rush of cold air catches them off guard. To combat this minor speed bump, it would be highly advised that all AC vents are directed towards the windscreen during the demisting process.
