Toyota’s sales of new motor vehicles surged more than eight per cent in Australia last month on the back of robust growth by HiLux and LandCruiser.

A market-leading tally of 16,567 vehicles in April 2016 for Toyota was more than 1,200 sales or almost 8.3 per cent ahead of its result from the same month last year.

The company and its dealers sold a daily average of more than 550 vehicles last month; no other brand reached 300 deliveries a day.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the April result beat its nearest rival by more than 7,900 vehicles or 91.7 per cent, lifting market share to 18.9 per cent.

“The strength of Toyota’s sales performance is remarkable, particularly given the intense competition and aggressive deals we are seeing in the market – all of which is great for consumers,” Mr Cramb said.

“Toyota is reaping the benefits of substantial improvements to our range over the past 12 to 18 months as well as continual advances that ensure owners and prospects are treated as valued guests of the Toyota family,” he said.

HiLux – following an all-new range introduced in the latter part of last year – expanded its leadership of the ute market with 3,384 sales last month, representing an April-on-April gain of more than 21 per cent.

Sales of the ever-popular LandCruiser 200 Series soared more than 77 per cent on the back of increased arrivals, resulting in 1,225 deliveries – the model’s best monthly result since June 2004.

Workhorse 70 Series LandCruiser variants – single and double cabs, troop carrier and wagon – also gained more than 20 per cent to end the month with 757 sales.

Corolla, which has been Australia’s best-selling car for each of the past three years, again leads the field in 2016 after 2,959 deliveries in April brought this year’s tally to 12,784 cars.

Camry (up 32.4 per cent) and RAV4 (up 8.9 per cent) also showed substantial improvements compared with the previous April.

Prado extended its lead as Australia’s best-selling large SUV while HiAce continued at the top of its van and bus market segments.
